Neil, Sarah & Oliver | A Photographer's Top 5 Tips For Bringing Pets To Your Session, Austin Family Photographer

Beautiful people, a very cute (and well-behaved) pupper, and aaaallllll the sunshine make for a truly wonderful session! So thankful to have gotten Neil, Sarah and Oliver in front of my camera this Fall!

P.S. It's always a good idea to include your pets in portraits when possible! Here's a few tips to keep in mind if you are thinking about bringing your pet to a session:

1. Give your photographer a heads up! Most photographers will love for a pet to be included, but might have some policies of their own as well as experienced advice for making it a smooth experience.

2. Once you've given your photographer some advance notice about your plans, come up with a game plan for what to do with your pet once they are done with their portion of the photos. A great idea is to bring along a friend or family member who can walk your pet or stay with them in an air-conditioned vehicle. This ensures you aren't having to look after your pet while you try to finish up your session, avoiding potential chaos! This friendly helper might also be perfect for helping your photographer get your furry friend to look his/her way!

3. Don't forget the little details! If you're a pet person, you know that they are truly part of the family. If you're planning to bring them along to the session, think of how to make it special for them too! One example of this is to purchase a collar + leash that coordinates with your planned outfits. Another way to pamper your pet before the session is to try and tire them out a bit before you leave for the session by playing fetch or going for a run. It's also not a bad idea to show up to your shooting location 15 minutes early to let your pet get familiar with this new and fun place!

4. Bring along some of your pet's most valued treats - not just something they would get every day, either! A soft, chewy treat might be ideal for this. These treats will be key in helping your dog to be obedient and to get them looking towards the photographer. Be sure that whatever treat you bring along is bite-sized and doesn't take long for your pet to chew. Pro Tip: Bring a portable bowl and some water to quench your dogs thirst in between shots!

5. At the end of the day, you have to remember that your pets are a lot like kids...they get excited, a little anxious and don't always listen best when they are in a new surrounding with lots of adults expecting a whole lot of them. Give your pet (and kids) some grace and if they are being uncooperative, don't stress if you can help it! Stay calm and just try to love on your pet during your portraits. It's okay if they won't look at the this case, give them kisses, tell them how good they are for sitting down, guide them into performing a trick!

I hope these tips prove to be helpful to some of your out there. Be sure to bookmark this blog page for when you decide to include your pet in portraits!

Caleb & Tabbatha, Eclectic Texas Wedding, Texas Wedding Photographer

I have been a total LOSERHEAD at blogging here's my comeback. Let's kick it off with this sweet, eclectic summer wedding that still has me all googly-eyed! Tabbatha and Caleb included the most thoughtful details and it was so fun to get creative with them at the beautiful and historic Cactus Hotel.

I thrive on working closely with my couples to help ensure that their day is smooth, joyful and organized as far as the photography goes. From the moment that Tabbatha booked with me, I knew her wedding day would be particularly special because you see; Caleb & Tabbatha's love is also something special. I don't know that I've ever seen any two people look at each other with such admiration of one another. Hearing their hopes for their marriage and wedding day through the course of their planning, hearing their prayers to one another during their first look, and hearing their vows exchanged - allowed me to be witness to a lifetime kind of love and good golly gosh...I feel so special to have shared in the joyful celebration.

Handmade bouquets, bridesmaids dresses you can *actually* wear again, laughter beyond measure? Sign me up for more of that please!
